Tressie McMillan Cottom, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University and faculty associate with Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. Cherisse Datu is a game designer and video producer. She currently works as an Interactive Media Producer for ESPN’s The Undefeated. She received her Masters in Game Design from American University, and was a JoLT (Journalism and Leadership Transformation) Fellow studying the the intersection of Game Design and Journalism with a grant from the Knight Foundation.
Amy oversees media entrepreneurship and special programs at SOC as well as teaches courses in reporting, convergent media and entrepreneurship. Emma Carew Grovum is a product manager at the Daily Beast in New York, working at the intersections of editorial, technology, workflow and audience. She’s also a cofounder of the Journalism Diversity Project. Previously, she’s worked with New York Times Opinion, Foreign Policy magazine, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Webbmedia Group, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Evelyn Hsu is co-executive director of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. She is a former associate director of the American Press Institute and a former member of the faculty of the Poynter Institute. John X. Miller is the senior editor for news and commentary for The Undefeated, ESPN’s new website that reports on the intersection of race, sports and culture. Miller was managing editor of the Winston-Salem Journal newspaper for 2 1/2 years before moving to ESPN. He is a native of Winston-Salem and is the first African- American managing editor of the Journal.
